Alternatives to Replacing York Compressor? 200 1983

Just got word from the shop that the non-existant A/C is not a leak but a dead compressor. Before going on a hunt for a York replacement, does anyone have any thoughts on replacement alternatives? Is there anything else that can fit in there with a bit of bracket magic, and do a better job? (105F in our area today!)
