Painting Calipers (how to).... 200

i was wondering what is the best way to paint the calipers? I am looking at red,yellow etc... Do i have to take the caliper off?? The guy where i bought it told me i had too. What if i leave it on, Brush it with a steel brush, spray the paint into a little container and paint it on?? Thanks
