problem with starting up on a 1990 volvo 740gl 700 1990

i have a 1990 volvo 740gl. it seems that on hot days my car has a harder time starting up. usually you just turn the key and it starts up. now on a hot day you have to turn the key and hold it there for several seconds before it starts. and a cople of times this has happened: on a hot day i turn the key and then hold it and i think it's gonna start so i let go. it pretends to start and then dies on me. no matter what i do again, it won't start. maybe half a day to a day later i go back to start it, it starts again. does anyone out there know what could be the problem? one other thing is that it's not a problem with my battery because i only got that battery replaced a year or so ago. anyone who know's anything about this please help me out. thanks a lot
