A/C system notes S90-V90

My car is in the shop today as the Baltimore weather suddenly jumps to 90+ with high humidity. The A/c doesn't seem to be cooling very well, especially during city driving and idle. I'm having the Smart VOV installed, but also suspect low freon.

I discussed this with my Volvo mechanic friend back in Illinois, and he offered two recommendations for approaching poor cooling in the S/V90s. First, of course, conduct a dye test with a black light. If nothing shows, then replace the Schrader valve and refill to slightly less than maximum. They now carry the valve as a stock item. He's found that this system runs better without being filled. He was remembering that the max is 2.07 (units?) and recommended that the sytem be filled to about 1.8. I'll let you know how it turns out here.

The system is a GM (is it Harrison?) product so it's likely the valve is widely available.

Thought this might be of interest to you BBsters.
