Suspension 101? 200 1982

Can anyone give me a basic explanation of the functions of various suspension components. After reading through the archives and doing some internet-based research, the main question I'm left with is about the difference in effect between sway-bars and stiffer springs. But with no foundation of knowledge, I don't know if there rules of thumb that you only go to the sway-bars after you've upgraded the springs, or vise-versa, or neither. When you upgrade one of those, do you need new shocks? Do shocks act only to dampen the recoil? As you can see, I don't know much in this dept.

Basicly, I was driving on the highway and didn't feel comfortable with my handling/speed (only 70-75) going into some curves. What would be the first (most basic, least expensive, etc) step to a 'sportier' feel to my ride.
