Why hardened seats? 120-130

In light of the previous thread, I want to pose a related question. Is it important to have hardened seats? I have read discussions on other sites that suggest that this modification is not necessary. The idea is that lead does little to protect the valve seat and that the regular cast iron heads are solid enough to prevent problems running on unleaded fuel. Any opinions or data on this? I am about to re-do a head and am undecided on whether to go the extra expense of hardened seats or not.
