Stuck at 124,999 200

All,

My odometer has stoped turning, unable to click over to 125,000. The spedo is still working fine. I have tried all the usual level seven solutions, beating on the dash with my fist, punching the trip reset ect...nothing works. My Volvo Guy says he just put a new odometer in for a guy, $500 for the part. Ouch. What do you guys think, is there hope for the thing, a broken tooth in a gear? Something slipping?
