AC Evaportator bad? What to do?

My 1990 740 turbo wagon can't hold freon (long ago converted to R134a).

My mechanic charged it yesterday and it was cold for 10 or 15 minutes, and then it went warm. He tried again; same results. A dye test showed no visible sign of a leak. He suggested that the evaporator was probably bad.

Is there a definitive way to tell if this is true? I'd hate to have it done only to discover that the problem lies elsewhere.

Has anyone here attempted this repair? How tough is it?

What should it cost to have it done?

Thanks.
