AC Evaporator bad? If so, what to do?

My '90 740 turbo (converted to R134a) won't hold freon.

My mechaninc charged it, it ran cold for 15 minutes, only to start blowing hot air. He charged it again; same result.

A dye test showed no visible leaks.

He suggested that the evaporator was probably bad.

Is the a definitive way to tell?

Has anyone here attempted this repair?

How much should it cost to have it done professionally?

Thanks.
