940 Wagon or Sedan, Which Would You Buy? 900

Ive owned nothing but Volvo wagons (3) and find them as good a utilitarian vehicle as you can buy, all things being equal. They are undoubtedly somewhat noisier than the sedan and harder to cool in the summer. Power may become an issue for you, as the 700/900 is somewhat heavier than the 240 series. I went directly from an 80 245 to a 92 960, so I may have a distorted perspective....

As for speakers, I'd bet that some of the higher end 940 have multiple speakers. My V90 has eight w/o a subwoofer. I'm uncertain about the requirements of a subwoofer, but I presume you could use some of the cargo area for one. An audio installer once talked to me about using supertweeters in the dash speakers, but I declined. My own personal opinion is that I have thought the car interior is neither a very good aucostic nor a comfortable listening space, but then I don't have an audiophiles ear!
