I don't think so. It does the same thing a set of points does on a car with battery ignition.... It opens and closes a circuit to ground to the primary side of the coil, ensuring ignition spark at the correct time. No switched primary=no spark. You might check it's ground connection, its the black wire in the intake manifold. This is also the EZ117K computer ground. How's your coil?
