Temp problems 200 1986

My tgemp guage on my 1986 240DL seems to run hot. I had the vehicle checked at the dealer and he says the engine is not hot and my sender and or temp guage might be bad. I have changed my tstat just to be sure. My question is...is there any way to manually check the engine temp to be sure it isn't over heating. Are there some signs that indicate overheating is in fact taking place. I don't want to screw up my engine.

I'm taking it on the road the 3rd and just want to be sure it's cooling correctly.

Thanks!

Mickey
