Annoying cold start after new fuel pump 200 1986

I have an '86 245 (LH 2.2) w/ M-46 manual tranny that is my daily driver. I bought it back in February, and have had mostly trouble-free driving except for a bout with the main fuel pump. My tank was full of rusty debris that was getting into the fuel pumps. I had a shop put a good fuel tank on the car, along with a known good used main fuel pump (I had previously replaced the in-tank pump and sending unit myself with new units). The car runs better than it ever has, doesn't stumble when I accelerate. Life is good except for one annoying thing - the car takes longer to start when cold, and it will stumble and die if I don't let it warm up for about 20 seconds before I take off. Also, occassionally, it will be harder to start when warm but this seems very intermittent. I never had this problem with the old main fuel pump that was on the car. My guess is that the check valve on the pump may be weak. Any thoughts on this one - it is more of an annoyance than anything, but I would like to make it right.
