I have a 88 740t wagon has 169,000 miles, I replaced on it so far a o2 censor,fuel presure sensor, fuel pump/filter(under frame) and intank screen,noise supresor and turbo. car is still only getting 16 mpgs and the engine is cutting out on acclerating even worse the longer the trip(didn't know that until trip), it acted almost like with the old turbo,it had a bad waste gate , when you gave it too much gas the engine would cut out when the turbo gage would read about 3:00 with the new turb it only goes as far as 2:00 so that part is ok. one more thing the last thing I replaced was the noise suppressor it seemed to fix the problem totally for about 2 weeks then started to act like it normally did or even a little worse. I took it on a trip accross pa (285 miles) pulling a trailer, about 1500# ran pretty good but towards the end you can sence on the hills a little of the cutting out. But on the way back I didn't get 60 miles away when all of the sudden I couldn't just keep it going 45 mph. Stopped at the next exit had a truck mech looked it over everything sounded ok,idled ok even reving it sounded fine, turbo sounded good not sucking air. we disconnected the battery and put the old noise supp on start the car then turned it off changed back to new one. also put some injector cleaner in tank and tried again to go on. it was better but still had the problem but not so bad.
In reading the faqs I think it sounds like the iac might need cleaning I am getting sick of this car running like this after all the work I put in.
Oh also I have one caliper, driver side it seems to go into anti lock mode some of the time (clicking) for no reason. changed abs sensor no differ. could replacing the caliper be the prob or in the anti lock pump. the pads on that caliper were 50% and the passenger side pads were almost gone.
