Strange 'crack' when braking 200 1990

Hi. I have a 240DL station wagon (1990). SOMETIMES (not everytime) when I brake, I hear a "crack" when the pedal is half way down to the floor (before contact.) It's not coming from the foot pedal, but under the drivers' side. It sounds very much like the doors sound now when they open and close (only not as loud) so I'm thinking something has to be lubed? However, the car was checked by some reliable mechanics, who say everthing looks fine. We are planning a long trip, and while the rest of the car is very smooth, this sound bothers me. Any ideas? Thanks!
