Poor acceleration! 700 1985

My car has very poor acceleration, especially when I start from a standstill.Is there a process of elimination tests I can do myself before I bring it to a mechanic ? I noticed that a slight muffler-like sound and I was wondering if it could be a blocked cat that would affect acceleration. I think it the original.
