PUZZLER - INSTRUMENTS LIGHTS OUT??

I'm almost ashamed to present such an apparently 'simple' problem to such a sophisticated group as BB'ers...but I'm stumped.

Swapped complete instrument cluster from a '90 244 into my '89 for several (good) reasons which aren't really germane here.

Added a tach too, but that shouldn't matter...

Now NONE of the primary Instrument lights work in the big gauge cluster, though the instruments do.

and please DON'T tell me to check the rheostat...it tests fine, and still controls the small clock and climate control lights.

I have performed the following:

1. checked and cleaned contacts for the fuses.

2. removed cluster and changed instrument (not warning lamp) bulbs.

3. cleaned bulb contacts

4. removed the cluster (again) to remove the SRS warning (90 had airbag, 89
doesn't...SRS warning always on unless bulb removed)

5. Tested rheostat fuction and voltage fluctuation...fine

6. continuity-tested all power supply to the cluster..fine

All gauges function perfectly...so wondering

Is there something inherently different in instrument circuitry from 89 to 90??

This is driving me bats...and is a real drag at night, as I can't read the temp...it's HOT here now.

Ideas?

Somebody?...Anybody??

thanks greatly,
Dennis
