I took my '88 240DL for a drive on up to Palm Beach today. About 20 minutes after leaving Homestead I noticed a strange clicking noise that seemed to be coming from behind the dashboard but only seemed to arise when I stepped on the breaks. Soon after the clicking the temperature gauge commenced to drop down to almost nothing. As soon as I pulled off the Palmetto expressway and onto US 441 the gauge recovered back to normal. I drove up to Palm Beach via 441 (city traffic) and back to Homestead (about 100 miles) via mixed city and highway traffic without the gauge dropping off again. What does this sound like is going on? Also I have noticed that the break pedal seems to give a little as I am coming to a stop. I have checked the fluid resevoir and it seems OK...thinking it was low on fluid or a fluid leak. What do y'all make of this? When I break there seems to be an intermittent feeling to the breaking...almost like an ABS pulse but I do not think this car has ABS. What could cause this and could this be related to the extra give in the break peddle after breaking?
