sulfur/hot metal smell when defroster/fan on.

This isn't a question about a Volvo, but my friends 97 Ranger 4cyl (the 240 of trucks). I tried the Ford equivalent of brickboard but didn't get any responses, so i thought i would try here.

His car has no AC. When the fan is on, an oder described to me as "a bit of octane, sulfury, and hot metal" appears. What might be causing this? A leaking heater core would produce a sweeter oder wouldn't it?
