Using a Turbo air filter box on NA engine? 700

Can I drop in the larger turbo air box directly into a regular North American 1989 744 GL (B230f)(ie. on the driver side where the current air box sits)? I was hoping to perform this mod in an attempt to increase the air flow into my engine and possibly eeck out the extra 1/10 HP.

Is this just a pure waste of time or is there merit to this idea? Secondly, I asked the question since I noticed that the air box for the turbos are located on the reverse side of the engine bay compared to the NA model?

Thanks in advance and I hope this is not too silly to ask,

Tim.
