91 240 donut/temp spare sizes 200 1991

I went to a junkyard and bought an original, brand new Volvo mini (donut) spare mounted on a volvo rim. The guy promised it would fit my son's 95 940, even after I told him it had 15" tires.

At home, the bolt pattern fit, and it worked fine on the rear tires, but not on the front because the brake caliper got in the way.

Yesterday I noticed my 91 240 has a 15" original volvo mini-spare in the trunk. Checked owner's manual; the 240 calls for a 15". But it tried the obvious anyhow and guess what? The 15" spare worked on the 940, and best of all, the 14" from the junkyard worked on the 240!!

Does anyone know if there is a specific reason why I must have a 15" mini spare on the 240 when the regular tires are 14", as recommended by the factory sticker inside the door?

thanks in advance,

mm
