bad compresson on #1 - diagnosis? 700

My '88 745ti (B230ft) came up with the following compression readings:

1 85
2 145
3 145
4 140

(wet)
1 120
2 210
3 210
4 180

#1 clearly has problems. #4 gave odd results on the wet test. The FAQ says a compression test on a cold engine is unreliable, but that is my only option right now.

I thought it might be rings, but the car didn't smoke when it was running. There was some regular coolant loss, but I'm not sure whether it was a high-pressure leak somewhere or a head gasket problem.

Any ideas?

thanks,

AJ
