Front End Clunking on 1996 960 900

I purchased a 1996 960 Wagon last fall with 58,000 miles for my wife. Over the winter it developed a knocking/clunking sound on both sides on rough roads. It now has 68,000 miles. Front end alignment put it up on lift and could't find anything. He guesses it might be antisway bar end links or upper strut bearings. I have owned 2 740 wagons that have gone over 200,000 miles each without such noise and without haveing to replace the above mentioned parts.
I tried jacking it up and lowering the car but can not duplicate the noise. Anyone out there with similar experience please share.
