Tight steering after installing front Bilstein struts 200 1990

I recently installed a set of Bilstein struts on my 1990 240 sedan. After installing them the steering seems tighter than it was before installation. Steering also does not easily return when I let go of steering wheel. When I reassembled - I torqued everything to spec - and the strut bearings seemed to be in good condition. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing the tight steering??
