I'm new to the 700 forum, but I have a couple of questions about my daughter's '87 760 turbo. I bought it for her four years ago, and it's been parked since then. It looked like it had been the victim of an extended Animal House road trip when we bought it from a neighbor whose four boys had driven it through their high school years. Daughter fixed up the interior using boneyard parts, then went off to college 1500 miles away from home. Now she needs to start using it. We just drove it from Dallas to Pasadena, California, and had time to observe several potential problems. 1. oil blowing out the dipstick tube--I was afraid to stuff the dipstick back down, fearing I might blow out the main seals if there was a crankcase ventilation problem. Here in Pasadena, I've determined that the oil trap is clear and the orifice into the intake is clear. The dipstick o-ring was very loose in the tube, so that may have been the culprit, but I'm wondering if there's a simple way to check for pressure in the crankcase. 2. climate control acts erratically--seems to be related to throttle position, so I'm suspecting vacuum leaks. How do you track them down and eliminate them? 3. boost seems anemic and delayed--three or four second delay before any significant response when the throttle is floored. How do you evaluate boost? 4. cruise inoperative--is there a troubleshooting procedure for that? 5. mysterious noisy contraption---there's some sort of component behind the battery on the inner fender that comes on from time to time, making a hellacious racket. Is this some sort of supplementary vacuum pump for some obscure function? It's not pictured in my owner's manual or the shop manual I have. Can anyone hazard a guess what it's for?
