Cursed headliner! 200 1984

I posted here last month I think asking how to remove the headliner from my 84 245. I was given a tip that I should start at one corner and just pull it away from the roof. Well I tried that and discovered that the liner has this metal band around it and it *seems* like its welded to the roof or something. Now I'm guessing that it is just held up by some kind of clip or something but I was really crankning on it with a claw hammer and the damn thing didn't budge!
Can anyone help me? I need to get it off so I can fill the holes from the roofrack.
Thank you.
