Ooooh hey instead of using a vice grip get "bull nose wire cutters". These can grab and hold a much smaller pc of stud than vice grips.Use a file an it to dull the cutting edge first so you won't just cut off any protruding part of the stud. This should be more effective if only a little bit of the stud sticks out. Any hardware store will have them
Dull the edge however!!
