444 axle differences 444-544

My 1952 PV-444 is being modified by using a B20, AW71 fourspeed auto and a 544 back axle. Replacing the axle appears to be anything but a straight job. The mounts for the suspension legs have to be cut off and repositioned. Now that can be done of course, but I don't understand it because all 444/544 suspension legs were mounted in the same way (angled inwards), didn't they? What are the differences between a 1952 rear end from a 444 and a 544 rear end?
I spoke to someone who once replaced the axle of his 1955 PV-444 by one from a 544 and he didn't have this problem, so maybe I should ask what the differences are between early and late 444 axles.
The one who sold the 544 axle to me assured me it wasn't one from a Duett (which could have been the explanation, because that car has leaf springs).
