Yes, the top open channel was a coolant passage.

I bought this car last year for $250 with the broken 9mm connecting rod and a bent 9mm connecting rod


Careful examination of the engine reveal the hose to the wastegate actuator was broken, and the hose to the fuel pressure switch was disconnected. In summation, there were no devices left connected to prevent overboost, and the Garrett T3 will put out way more boost than the engine can handle.
