transmission problems 700

Just changed the heater hoses and heater valve on my car. Had to practically lay on top of the engine to get it done. When I took the car out to set if the hoses were good I noticed that when in 'D' it isn't shifting into 2nd or 3rd when I backed off the pedal like usual. I tried manually shifting into 2 and it stays in 1st. Seems that it cant' or wont leave 1st gear? The gas pedal also seems unusually touchy. Everything was normal yesterday. Is it possible while doing the heater hoses I knocked something way out of adjustment??? or do I have a serious tranmission problem? The transmission still goes in reverse BTW.
