remove a/c without penalty?? 700 1985

Hello, I'm going on a big road trip soon in my 85 740 gle - straight 4.
The a/c hasn't been charged for a few years now, doesn't work and that's fine with me.
My question is, can i take out the rad and unbelt the compresser to increase the air flow to the engine rad without any consequences??

As well, my electric cooling fan sensor mounted on a cooling hose, appears to be fried. The fan works perfectly when you short out the two connectors, but other than that it never comes on. I was going to hotwire it to a switch that runs inside the car so I can turn it on while standing in traffic, etc.
Bad/Good idea??????
Replies gratefully acknowledged!!
