Engine clicking 900 1991

My Volvo is making an annoying clicking/ticking sound that can be heard distinctly from inside the car. The sound seems to come from the driver's side of the engine, back towards the firewall. I have had two different shops (one being the Volvo dealership) listen to it. Both hear it, but the best answer I have been given as to what is causing it has been "resonance": the engine is making the sound and resonance (from windshield, etc.)is causing it to be particularly loud to the driver. I was told not to worry about it. I could dismiss it more easily if I knew what the sound was from. I've only recently acquired this car and oddly enough I didn't hear the ticking when I first drove it. I had the oil/filter changed after the purchase, but can't remember if I had heard the ticking before the change. P.S. I needed I new turbo put in a couple of weeks after buying it (at 145,000 miles) and the shop has had much difficulty with getting the exhaust system to quit rattling. It's quiet now, but the exhaust pipe really seems to vibrate from side to side when the car is running. Thanks for any help you can give me.
