M41 reassembly questions 120-130

The saga continues...

When reassembling the M40 part of the M41 which comes first...the layshaft or the Mainshaft? The Haynes guide seems to think that it is possible to put the layshaft in second since we all have skinny 15 inch fingers to reach around the mainshaft, and the mainshaft will not fit with the layshaft in place unless you remove the input shaft bearing, but then you have to get the bearing back in without maiming the input shaft.

It looks so easy in the photos...

Any help from past experience would be greatly appreciated as I am running out of swedish curse words and want to get the wagon on the road.
