Problem solved--thanks for all your help (91 740) 700 1989

I finally took the car to my mechanic. I described the problem to him and he immediately said that it was probably the starter solenoid. He quickly removed the starter from underneath the car in less than 5 minutes, hooked it to some wires and a meter, turned a hair dryer on the solenoid for a couple of minutes, heating it up, and got it to fail. He put a rebuilt starter in and everything is now working fine--cranks every time with a hot restart.

Thanks to you all for helping me understand the car's starting system and what could be wrong.

Allan
