Automatic Shifting question 700 1990

My 90'volvo 740 turbo is off and on showing the shift light when driving. It seems not to be shifting to 4th or 5th gear when going 50 mph or higher. However, sometimes if i stop and turn the car off and back on it goes away and drives fine. However, this seems to be happening more frequent now. Any suggestions?
