ENGINE FLUSH 900 1991

An inspection of my newly acquired 940 GLE's valve train shows a significant buildup of a brown deposit of varnish, gum, etc. The only simple way to help reduce this, that I know of, is to use Engine Flush additives when changing the oil. Is this my only option and if so, can someone recommend an effective product to use? Thanks for your input.
