B16 Backfire 444-544

Have a 1959 PV B16 with H4 SU's that runs great but which backfires 4 or 5 seconds after it is shut off. Float levels O.K.; engine is in perfect tune with carbs syncroed correctly and at low idle. Timing was done with a strobe and again with an on and off light at the distributor. Had a crackin the exhaust manifold when I bought it which I repaired. Am thinking and have been told I might have a cracked or warped valve. Anyone have a less complicated explanation before I tear it down?
Thanks,
John
