Oil in coolant!. . .what's wrong? how to fix? 200 1987

well, i was driving to walmart today to buy some stuff, and i noticed that my coolant temp gauge was reading at about 7:30. I've done the board bypass, so that wasn't the problem. I stopped for gas and checked my coolant level. . .it was full, and BROWN. Smelled like oil, felt slippery like oil, etc. I took off the oil fill cap, and some (like a few wisps) steam came out. The oil level was at just around the tip of the dipstick. SO i filled the engine back up with oil, let it cool off for a while (cancelled the trip to walmart), and drove the 2 miles or so back home with the heat up the whole way.

any idea as to what went wrong? could this be a headgasket problem? could it be a tiny oil-pissing elf? (please let it be the elf) any ideas would be appreciated, and i cvan give you more info if it's needed.

Thanks
mike
