95 960 3L coils question 900

Hi my 95 960 3.0L has started to idle unevenly and use a lot of fuel, after talking to my local Volvo mechanic he suggested that the coils may be at fault?
How do I test the individual coils to see which one needs changing?
or do I need a special tool for this?
I just thought that if its a 5 min fix id give it a go myself!!!
