tranny sticks in 1st gear till really high revs 200

1986 volvo 240 automatic trans with O/D aw70 or aw71 can't remember which one . Anyways for the first drive of the day the trans sticks in first gear for a loooong time. Unless I floor it and the car revs way up and then it shifts. It would probably stay in first for miles if I didn't rev the daylights out of it. After it warms up it seems to go back to normal. I did pull the plug on the tranny pan and about 4qts came out. The book says 5.2qts without the torque converter so thats what I put back in. One of those qts was a qt of Lucas trans fix. Heard great things about it. Then after some driving its leaking fluid. When I pulled the dipstick it said there is WAY to much in there. Which makes me think it's blowing of some excess. I can't determine where it's leaking from.
Does anyone know why it sticks in first?
