'89 240 same engine as '91 740? 200 1989

I was looking up stats on my car compared to my friend's car. I've got an '89 244 GL while he's got a '91 744, and I noticed that the engine size and horsepower are the same for both. The 740s are heavier (not much, about 150 lbs.) than the 240s, so I would have thought they would get more powerful engines, but that doesn't appear to be the case. I looked at that 200 page that had the timeline with the various engines at each stage in the series, but I haven't come across one for the 700s to compare.
