I always thought there was only Freon R-12 and the new R134. But after we had gotten a recharge of a lb. on the 740 for $120, when I spoke to some shops about doing my 240 too, suddenly they were saying either you got the world's lowest R-12 price or they used a blend, aka "freeze 12." I have since learned that OEM's will not endorse blends for use on a OE Freon-R12 air conditioning system. Some shops say it is contaminated and they will not recharge a system that has it in it, to keep their equipment free of it. Other shops say they use it without problems in their own vehicles without problems.
I suppose there is no way to tell what we got, short of an analysis test. When I called about the job - before they had our $$$, they said they had the real thing. But the tech that put it in said there is no real R-12 left and all R-12 is a blend.
I have since learned that there are actually a S___load of R-12's, so-called compatible refrigerants on the market. Freeze-12 seems to be one of the more popular in our area. A guy from an air conditioning specialty shop read off quite a list of the blends to me. Not sure if they are synthetic or not, or if it even matters.
What I dislike is the dishonesty of the shop that told us they had the real thing. I told them that's what Volvo always put in it; and the vehicle service papers reflect that no one else ever touched the car for that type of work. In fact, this is the first time it was ever recharged at all that I know of. When my Mom first got the car the service history papers form Volvo state the compressor seized, and they fixed it under a warranty claim. I suppose they had to evacuate and recharge it then?
What should I do - sue in small claims court, if they do not make good and evacuate all the Freeze 12 and replace it with the real thing (pure Freon R-12). I will have to first get it tested on a machine to prove the system is now contaminated with the blend
