Greetings to All,
Previously my speedo/odometer acted erratic, then over a five year period only worked on occasion. It started making a sharp cracking noise last Fall and that's when I disconnected it at the transmission and covered the end of the cable with plastic to keep the dirt out.
I finally got the time to explore today. The cable runs freely in the housing (I can turn it by hand from the transmission end). If I attach the handy drill I can make it read 60 MPH smoothly with no noise, again, from the transmission end.
I pulled the innards: I have a yellow plastic drive gear which shows only uniform wear in the center of each tooth but I don't think it's significant. The gear teeth are square. All surfaces on the housing, drive and pinion are smooth. I cleaned it in trans fluid, reinstalled, and ran it with no change (except that for some reason it doesn't make the cracking noise - yet). Other than the slight wear, I can see no obvious signs pointing to why it doesn't work.
Is the gear wear possibly more significant than I think? Is the fault likely within the transmission drive? Is there any way to tell without pulling the tranny? What would be a reasonable next step? Is world peace possible...
Thanx to all
