B230 no start, crank sensor ring? 700 1989

I let another mechanic install a spare engine in my spare 740. Shoulda been a plug and play but he blew it. Wouldn't idle and ran rough. Did all the checks, tracked it down to possibility that the ring gear, with the holes, was put on wrong and only barely ran. I was told to reindex it to where the blanked off part was under the sensor, with cylinder one at TDC, which I did. Now I've got a no start. At least before it would run but wouldn't idle. Looking in the Haynes manual for later 240 (covers this kind of FI) doesn't address how to put the gear on. Anyone run into this? Blanked off part was at about eight oclock, before I changed it.
Thanks for reading this, thanks even more for answering. I have two 740s, an 87 and an 89, which are my 4th and 5th seven series cars. Got enough stuff to build one more diesel if anyone's interested. Other interests are Land Rovers and Minis (real ones)
Cheers!
