AW 71 noises 200 1984

The auto box in the wife.gov's car has started making odd, quite loud whining noises at low road speeds. Only does it when the car is coasting at slow speeds and the noises are the same in all gears. It usually (but not always) stops once the box is really warm. The box still works perfectly. No shifting faults at all. I asked a tranny shop for advice. They said it was likely to be worn needle bearings in the planetary gear sets and repair would cost more than the car is worth. Another shop was sure that it wasn't the gears, but more likely a hydraulic problem. Maybe a front pump? I replaced the fluid (as much as is possible) and cleaned the filter, but it made no difference. The noises started just after the bush in the rear extension housing and the front and rear seals were replaced.

Anyone come across this before or have any advice please?
