Alternator Replacement 1800 1970

After reading the May debate on Bosch vs Delco elsewhere on this board, I am not only more confused, I'm also reluctant to start something like that again. But, that's the beauty of the Internet: You get 100 different opinions and get the opportunity to choose the one you want. So, here goes...take cover:

Recently had a battery replaced in my '70 1800E. Has a 35 Amp Bosch alternator, I cleaned it up and replaced the bearings when I got the car. When they installed the battery (reputable shop, not Sears or Pep Boys) they told me that with the headlights and blower motor on, it wasn't keeping up (I have some flame thrower Euro headlamps, 85/100, I believe). So I just purchased a Marchal 55 amp alternator (from an 1800) on eBay, thinking that both had internal regulators and that it would be a straight switch. Now I'm wondering about that regulator thing.

I rarely drive the car long distances at night. I can't ever remember having the blower on high. The current alternator seems to be purring along. Bosch is better than SEV Marchal. Do I really want to make the switch, or should I just keep that "new" alternator as a back-up. If I put it in, what would be required?

I'm heading for the bomb shelter now. Will emerge when the answers and opinions are all in and the smoke has cleared. Thanks.
