ECU Replacement 700 1987

With over a year's suffering through intermittent poor idling and hot starts and replacement and/or testing of every conceivable component of the FI and ignition systems ('87 744 w/B230F), I am finally resigned to trying a replacement ECU. For what it's worth, my mechanic concurs. My question is this: is this replacement as straightforward as removing the old and inserting the new? Is there any curve balls to avoid? Tips? Thanks in advance....
