Help needed re: instrument bulb 700 1989

I am trying to replace the instrument bulb used for the instrument cluster to the right of the steering wheel (ex. where the defroster switch is).

I went to Advance Auto and looked up the bulb I needed as being a Sylvania #2721. Got it and compared it to the bulb I took out and they appeared to be the same.

Problem now is I can't seem to get the new bulb to go into the socket. Looks like the little rounded nipple at the end of the bulb is causing the problem but the old buld had the exact same kind of thing. It looks like the nipple is hitting the plastic that is in the middle of the socket

Is there some trick I need to be made aware of in terms of getting the new buld back into the socket? I sort of feel foolish asking this since it comes across like a "how many Volvo owners does it take to put in a light bulb" kind of joke but I could really use some help.

Thanks.
