Electric cooling fan won't turn off 200 1992

The electric cooling fan (the "pusher" fan in front of the radiator) on my 240 will not turn off. I turn the car off, and the fan continues running--which it does not usually do. I didn't start worrying until I noticed that the fan was still running 30 minutes later.

At that point, I unplugged the fan at its connector right behind the grille in order to preserve my battery.

The fan comes on now whenever I plug it in, regardless of whether the car is running or not, cold or hot. The A/C has been off during these tests.

Any ideas what could cause this?

Will I damage my car by driving it without the electric fan--assuming I do not use the A/C?
