Wax thermostat. Is it necessary, or can I disconnect? 200

I'm swapping heads , 76 to 79. My '79 head has a wax thermostat where the '76 has a plug. When I try to pull the plug I strip the bolt. A Volvo mechanic suggests capping off the hoses and having the hole in my head tapped and capped. Is this OK? I don't want to spend alot of $$$ having this head re-machined, but I don't want the vaccuum loss to affect my running either. What do I do???? Thanks!
